Blog: This Week in the Woods

Wood ducks and muskrats and carp, Oh My!
05.31.2011

Fugate Woods is, as most of the surrounding area....Wet, Wet, Wet.

That means this can be a special time for a long walk to try and catch a glimpse of the wood ducks on the water over the Stands Tall Tree Trail. Approach ever so quietly as the ducks are not only beautiful, but very shy. If not apparent on the water, check out the trees. These ducks roost in the trees, and eat acorns as well!

Maybe you will spot the huge carp cruising these waters as well.

There have been several sightings of a not so shy muskrat 'back- stroking' near his den in the west bank just south of Gathering Grove.

The trails were mown recently but you will notice that the abundant growth of the grasses and broadleafs create a different perspective on 'the woods' prior to the mosquito influx in June and July!

If you are interested in volunteering as a Fugate Woods Trail Steward plan to attend one of the orientation sessions posted on the website calendar. Individuals, families and groups are welcome to join in the effort to maintain trails, prepare for prairie burns, woodland restoration burns, identified wood removal, establishment of natural play areas, or as a volunteer for student field trip activities. For additional information on Trail Stewardship, please contact the Fugate Woods Steward through the website.
